Australian music industry tycoons King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have once again proven why they are the hardest working band in the country. They’ve just announced they will be releasing another two albums this year, and have released a new single to keep us hungry for more. The 8-piece Melbourne psychedelic/rock band will be releasing K.G and Live in San Francisco ‘16’ in November, adding to their already 17-album-strong catalogue. The band has offered up a taste of what’s to come with their latest single, ‘Automation’.
‘Automation’ kicks off with a riff that can’t be heard without thinking “this sounds like King Gizz!”. The band have honed in on their iconic sound, but have once again pushed the boundaries and explored what is possible from a guitar-driven band. The verses are filled with fuzz-soaked guitar riffs and clean, smooth bass lines that must be enjoyed through some good speakers or headphones. The use of synthesizers throughout the song also adds to the overall depth of the track. Although they aren’t a main feature within the song, they provide atmosphere and space. This helps bring together all of the organic instrument sounds, pushing the envelope on what can be achieved by a 'guitar band'.
KG&TLW has once again captured their ‘sound’ with ‘Automation’. Even though the song has a messy and chaotic feel, the musicianship and creativity required to play and write the incredible riffs and basslines on this track are of a very high level. The drums featured on the track are exactly what the song needs, not too much but definitely not too little. Michael Cavanaugh’s drumming is reminiscent of great players such as John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and could even be compared to the drum work of Michael Shrieve from Santana’s ’69 Woodstock performance – crazy, yet fast and accurate.
The lyrics and vocal melodies tie the single together, sitting nicely with the styles of guitar melodies that were written for the song. In short, this a perfect King Gizzard song. If someone had never heard a single song from the band, this song perfectly encapsulates everything that the ‘Gizz are known and loved for – distortion drenched guitar riffs, psychedelic drumming, synths, a dash of genre-defying song composing, and vocals that sit perfectly within the various elements that this supergroup of a band creates.
'Automation' by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is available to stream everywhere now.
